I heard about this person who bought an AK47. That person I heard about wanted to know what to do with his new AK47 from Romania (at least new when shipped over here). I heard that this person said that there was some strange looking corrosive buildup on the internal bolt actions. I heard he wanted to know if using steel wool would work for removing this crap or if it would screw up the rifle.

Answer by Chris H Only good can come from this. That being said, depending on which state you live in you may not be old enough/able to buy that kind of gun. Many states require people to be 21 before buying assault rifles while others (like CA) simply ban them outright.

Say you have a very long block of balistics gel ( perfectly uniform in consistency ) . You shoot an Ak-47 round in it, then a M4A1 round. How much farther will the AK-47 round go, than the M4 round?

Answer by Larry I don’t know how far it will go in, but I can tell you an AK is something like a .308, whereas an m4 is 5.56mm or .223. I would say that the AK would go much further than the m4.

I’m about to move into my first apartment so I’m thinking about purchasing a firearm. I was thinking and there can’t be anything more intimidating to a burglar than to walk in on somebody with an AK on hand so that’s what I want to go with. I have no clue where to look for one though? We have a few gun shops around here but I havent checked them yet or would it be better to purchase online? Answer by Patrick intimidating is not important, you don’t want to second guess a burglar with “intimidation”, you want to kill them. An ak-47 is a horrible weapon to use for apartment self defense, it’s high powered round will penetrate walls with ease, inflicting collateral damage.
If your after a big gun, go with a shotgun, it is by far the best home defense weapon. In the event of a break in your adrenaline will be running, you will be shaking and innaccurate, a shotgun requires virtually no aim, and the burglar will not get back up. I reccomend a 12 gauge automatic for maximum firepower.
Otherwise just get a handgun w/ hollow point rounds. Hollow point rounds fragment and do not go through walls easily, but they inlfict massive damage on the target. Also, you can take a handgun with you when you leave the house (you could get a weapon permit depending on the state) therefore, it won’t get stolen if your apartment gets burglarized while you are not there.
An ak-47 (semi-auto) is available at any gun store, and requires less intensive background checks than a handgun.
ak’s range from 0-1000 depending on the quality and/or brand name.

Question by Scott: How do ak-47 design variations affect the quality of the gun?
My cousin just bought a Saiga 308. It’s the same type design as an ak, but obviously it’s not an ak, it’s a Saiga 308. Will his 308 show the same durability and ruggedness as an actual ak?

Answer by SSG.Wentworth With that design, the portion of the gun, which is the bolt, bolt carrier, and charging handle is a very heavy part of the firearm. With heaviness, also comes size. The mixture between a large size and weight makes the recoil of the bullet a lot more. The reason for this is because there is a normal recoil of the bullet leaving the firearm. The second is of the weight of the bolt jolting back in your shoulder, which also raises the muzzle more. With a firearm such as the AR15 or M16, the bolt has a very small peice inside that moves back and forth and it is much smaller to eject a bullet by moving backwards, whereas the ak’s wohle bolt assembly moves. Other than that the AK is a very simple design and that makes it’s reliablilty very good. It can take a lot of wear and tear and even heavy duty impact like smashing it on a cinderblock-wall and it will still function 100%, or running it over with a car.

Question by CURIOUS GEORGE: What do you think of the AK-47 in bullpup style?
I’m thinking about buying one, I want a rifle that is reliable under extreme conditions and will go bang every time I pull the trigger, like the legendary AK-47. I know that its accuracy will not be like my AR-15. I have been seeing them for sale around me, and the one that really caught my attention was the AK-47 in bullpup configuration, it is much shorter, has an ergonomic polymer stock and grip, and has the peep sights of an AR-15.

Answer by Q Continuum Reloading is a little weird, and definitely not as quick. I’ve heard the reliability isn’t as good on them, though I haven’t used one long enough to have any problems. Personally, I’m not a big fan of them (or bullpups in general). I would recommend trying to find one you can at least hold before going out and buying one.
Stocks, grips, sights, ect. can be easily changed on the regular AK too. So don’t let that be your ultimate deciding factor. Make sure it feels and works well for you first.
